Steal Like An Artist

Jane, a friend of mine from the great state of Texas (she would smile if she heard me say this), sent this TED video link to me. It is titled “Steal Like an Artist”. The video is thought provoking – it may give you permission, confirm your beliefs, or even outrage you.

My feeling on the topic…..

I love looking at jewelry as inspiration for my own designs. I look for components that are appealing to me, identify what design element, principle or style is involved and add it to my “painter’s palette”. Having said this, I love looking at other objects for inspiration as well – architecture, pottery, sculpture, etc. Whether the inspiration is from jewelry or otherwise, I can’t help but put my own spin the design.

In the design class I teach, I have students peruse Lark books noting which samples they are drawn to and those they can’t stand. They then begin identifying what design elements and principles underlie their choices. It is all about developing their ability to think in the language of design. I can’t tell you how much it can impact your work to have good command of this language.

    Fascinating! Thank you! Liz

  2. Kathy, let me start with this – what an incredibly good writer your are. Looking for another job? Just kidding…. I am so happy the video and Pinterest have been helpful to you. My first love in jewerly making is design and I decided to spend more time focused on it. I can’t tell you how happy I am when someone else is excited about design. About 6 months ago Sharon (I think you know her) asked me to do an intermediate design class – perhaps I will make this part of the next group of classes. Have fun and remember I have been making jewerly for about 15 years and I am as excited about it today as I was back in the “what is a jump ring?” days!

Oh my gosh Connie….what a guilt-lifting little video. The imitation/copying thing has been eating at me for some time now. I’ll need to thank Jane next time I see her. This is work I really look forward to. I’m counting 2 years and I’m not even close to bored yet. And thank you, for sharing your Pinterest page. I’ve been told and told that I need to do this—only now do I see why. Even though I live in the country with weeds wildness and some disarray, there is nothing like freshly cut lawn, a clean kitchen, and a straight line to put my mind at ease. Having such easy access to these images is very appealing and I will no longer lose the tiny clippings I steal out of the magazines when I’m getting my pedicure. And your page—my gosh—really got my juices flowing and further helps me to know what I’m looking at. Going through your selections makes me realize I need to include a little more discipline into my ‘hobby’. Once again, thank you for the guidance beyond the classroom. Looking forward to your new season of classes and have a new ‘friend’ from Idyllwild who will probably join in as well. Kathy

Thank you so much for sharing your Pinterest page. It’s a master class in design. You are a generous teacher!
